In the ancient past, there was a hero named Hou Yi who was excellent at archery. His wife was Chang’e. One year, the ten suns rose in the sky together, causing great disaster to the people. Hou Yi shot down nine of the suns and left only one to provide light. An immortal admired Hou Yi and sent him the elixir of immortality. Hou Yi did not want to leave Chang’e and be immortal without her, so he let Chang’e keep the elixir. However, Pang Meng, one of his apprentices, knew this secret. So, on the fifteenth of August in the Chinese lunar calendar, when Hou Yi went hunting, Pang Meng broke into Hou Yi’s house and forced Chang’e to give the elixir to him. Chang’e refused to do so. Instead, she swallowed it and flew into the sky. Since she loved her husband and hoped to live nearby, she chose the moon for her residence. When Hou Yi came back and learned what had happened, he felt so sad that he displayed the fruits and cakes Chang’e liked in the yard and gave sacrifices to his wife. when people learned of this story, they burnt incense on a long altar and prayed to Chang ‘e, now the goddess of the moon, for luck and safety. The custom of praying to the moon on Mid-Autumn Day has been handed down for thousands of years since that time.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is also called the moon festival. It traditionally falls on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar.
In China, it’s a reunion time for families. It is the second most important festival in China after Chinese New Year. People celebrate it by gathering for dinners, worshiping and appreciating the moon, lighting paper lanterns, and eating mooncakes.
Appreciating the Moon 赏月
The full moon is the symbol of family reunions in Chinese culture.
Chinese people usually set a table outside their houses and sit together to admire the full moon while enjoying tasty mooncakes. Parents with little kids often tell the legend of Chang’e Flying to the Moon. As a game, kids try their best to find the shape of Chang’e on the moon.
Worshiping the Moon
According to the legend of Mid-Autumn Festival, a fairy named Chang’e lives on the moon with a cute rabbit. On the night of the Moon Festival, people set a table under the moon with mooncakes, snacks, fruits, and a pair of candles lit on it. Some believe that by worshiping the moon, Chang’e (the moon goddess) may fulfill their wishes.

This is children’s favorite activity. Mid-Autumn lanterns have many shapes and can resemble animals, plants, or flowers. The lanterns are hung in trees or on houses, creating beautiful scenes at night.

Why Is Mid-Autumn Festival Celebrated and How did it Start?
版本一
Mid-Autumn Festival has a history of over 3,000 years, dating back to moon worship in the Shang Dynasty (1600–1046 BC). It’s such an important festival that many poems were written about it, stories and legends about the festival are widespread, and its origins have been guessed at and explained by generations of Chinese.
The term ”Mid-Autumn” first appeared in the book Rites of Zhou (《周礼》), written in the Warring States Period (475–221 BC). But the term was only related to time and seasons. People didn’t celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival then.
In the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), it was popular to appreciate the moon. Many poets liked to create poems related to the moon when appreciating it. There is a legend that Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty visited the Moon Palace in his dream and heard a wonderful song.
In the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127 AD), the 15th day of the 8th lunar month was established as the ”Mid-Autumn Festival”. From then,it became a custom.
The festival has a long history. In ancient China, emperors followed the rite of offering sacrifices to the sun in spring and to the moon in autumn. Historical books of the Zhou Dynasty had had the word ”Mid-Autumn”. Later aristocrats and literary figures helped expand the ceremony to common people. They enjoyed the full, bright moon offered sacrifices to the moon, expressed their feelings and thoughts under the bright moon. All of these celebrations were held by the common people which became a traditional ceremony. Unitl the Tang Dynasty the custom of offering sacrifices to the moon was more important and the Mid-Autumn Festival was fixed.
The Mid-Autumn Festival probably began as a harvest festival. The festival was later given a mythological flavour with legends of Chang-E, the beautiful lady in the moon.
